Aim
Extending the metadata for publications to include links to datasets includes more than just addressing the citation of datasets, and importing links to URIs. An important aspect of this relationship is how it fits with approaches to organising metadata. For example, at the CCLRC, EPubs uses the FRBR model (http://www.ifla.org/VII/s13/frbr/frbr.pdf), which uses notions of a Work, its various Expressions, Manifestations, and Items in order to capture that a publication is not a simple one-off object, but rather a linked collection of versions and variants, (e.g. posters, pre-prints, tech reports, presentations and possibly various versions of each), and represented in a variety of formats. This has proven to be a very robust and useful model and extending this for datasets will be an important component of the proposed work. We would need to investigate where datasets relate to FRBR - at which levels the dataset would be related, and how changes in dataset are reflected in changes in expression of the work.. The situation is further complicated in that the e-Prints archive at Southampton does not use a similar life-cycle for metadata, and so issues associated with differing standards in the institutional repositories will also need to be addressed.
